Tarot and the Number 5
In the Tarot, the number 5 is represented by The Hierophant.
Note that while the Hierophant commonly symbolizes narrow-mindedness, it is only a superficial understanding of the card. Remember that the Tarot originated in the 14th or 15th century, the Church back then is different from organized religion today. In order to fully appreciate the meanings and dimensions of the Hierophant you need to view this in the context of organized religion in earlier times.
The Hierophant wears an ornate robe of red which covers a white tunic. He sits on a chair decorated with elaborate carvings. At his feet two disciples are kneeling and there are two golden keys, these represent the tools of the Magician. The stone pillars beside the Hierophant represent the structure of the church; colored in grey they symbolize that the building is secondary to the understanding of religion.
The lesson of the Hierophant is to provide spiritual direction and guidance. Traditionally, the Church offers an organized, methodical path to spirituality. However, following doctrine and dogma doesn’t require understanding. This results in a very superficial understanding of enlightenment as most do not develop an experience of the divine, only of the church and its agents.
The 5 has a broader view of religion and spirituality, casting aside the dogma and traditions of organized religion to seek their own experiences. It is through this direct experience that they experience the divine for what it is and they develop this over time. After all, if someone tells you about religion it’s a matter of belief but if you experience it yourself it’s a matter of understanding.
