Birthday Numerology (Life Path Number)
– the secrets of your birth numbers revealed
Birthday Numerology (Life Path Number)
What numbers tend to be important to us? Our birthdays may instantly spring to mind. Indeed, there are few more significant dates and numbers to us than the day where we sprung forth unto this world!
As such, it is perhaps of no surprise to learn that our birthdays are seen as some of the most significant numbers in numerology.
The number derived from your date of birth is known as the Life Path number, and along with your Destiny or Expression number derived from your full name and the Heart’s Desire Number derived from the vowels of your name, these three numbers are probably the most important in your numerology chart.
Ultimately, their purpose is to identify and extract meaning from the two most fundamentally important alphanumerical elements of our identity – our names and birthdays.
The Life Path Number
In Pythagorean numerology, or Western numerology, the most popular type of numerology adopted in English or Latin-derived language countries, the Life Path number is calculated from our date of birth, as written on our birth certificates.
The Life Path Number bears some similarities to our astrological star signs in that it is supposed to encapsulate ‘who we really are’. It deals with what we know – the past and present of our lives – more than it deals with what is ahead of us. Our lives ahead and futures are represented more by our Destiny or Expression numbers, which are derived from our names.
You can see the logic here. The Life Path Number contains a great deal of information about where we came from – our origin. In a similar way to an astrological star sign, the spiritual qualities of our date of birth resonate with our personalities. The Destiny Number, derived from our full names, instead reveals more about how we go forth unto the world as a physical being.
The Pythagorean method used to calculate our Life Path number involves the use of a simple chart. Pythagoras had long studied the peculiar mathematical qualities of both numbers and letters, and with his followers, the Pythagoreans, he worked towards a spiritual synthesis of letters and numbers.
Calculating the Life Path Number
First, write out your date of birth:
15/12/1950 (15th of December 1950)
15: 1+5 = 6
12: 1+2 = 3
1950: 1 + 9 + 5 + 0 = 15 = 6
6 + 3 + 6 = 15
1 + 5 = 6
The process here is one of reduction. You simply reduce each component of your date of birth by adding the parts together.
Master Numbers
In Pythagorean Numerology, there are three ‘master numbers’. These are 11, 22 and 33.
When you calculate your Life Path number or Destiny or Expression number, you may encounter a master number.
One such prolific example is Sir Paul McCartney, who was born on 18/06/1942, or June 18th 1942 (month = 6, day = 9, year = 7).
This produces the number 22. This can be further reduced to 4 but 22 is a master number that shares the spiritual resonance of 4 whilst also adopting a newfound character of its own.

What Does My Life Path Number Mean?
Life Path Number 1
1 is an independent, strong, and autonomous number. In this life and/or the life preceding it, you are or were a strong leader. 1’s independence may border on fierce, it is also the loneliest number in some respects. Work must be done to find togetherness with others.
Life Path Number 2
2, contrasting greatly to 1, is non-isolated. It is a selfless number that seeks relationships and connections. 2 is a great fit for many types of friendships and family situations. In this life or the life previous, Life Path 2 means great integration with communities. It is an emotionally strong number but also rather vulnerable due to how well it fits with other numbers.
Life Path Number 3
3 is a well-cultured fun-loving number. It has frenetic movement and energy and can leap and bound forward with enthusiasm. This can be inspirational to others, but it may also affect how seriously they take you. Life Path number 3 represents humor and amusement in this life or the life previous.
Life Path Number 4
4 is a structured and balanced number with stricter, square rules that contrast particularly to 3. In this life or the life previous, Life Path 4 represents a lack of willingness to take risks. Risk-taking is sometimes beneficial and you should look to act on this. Your rules and routine are an asset. They may become too enduring and start to rule over you – you must look out for this.
Life Path Number 5
5 is a free-wheeling number with a thirst for adventure. Unlike 4, and similarly to 3, it embraces risks. In this life or a past life, you are or were a free-spirited soul that enjoyed being out and about. Proper structure is not your forte, and can be your greatest weakness.
Life Path Number 6
Meticulous, responsible and caring, 6 is a balanced number. Forgiveness came easily to you in this life or a life past. You find it easy to act on reconciling differences and finding mutual ground. Be wary of trading away too many of your principles for peace. Learn to focus on yourself more.
Life Path Number 7
Imaginative and pragmatic, Life Path 7 has flair and expression. Intuitive and able to contemplate and answer fundamental existential questions, 7 is generally comfortable with the mysteries of life. This may lead them from the path of rationalization further towards the path of abstraction.
Life Path Number 8
In this life or a previous life, Life Path 8 represents power and influence. 8 is a number that is easily respected, it is strong and formidable. Materialism can be a problem here, but 8 is also a truthseeker and does not shy away from the facts.
Life Path Number 9
Compassionate, kind, and tolerant, Life Path Number 9 is indicative of an accommodating individual in this life or a past life. Responsibility and care come naturally to 9, who generally have an excellent intuition into the feelings of others. Similarly to 6, this means a greater focus on oneself may be required.
