Numbers, they are everywhere. 

Even behind the letters on this webpage are incredibly complex lines of numbered code. Seconds, minutes, hours, days, months, years, these are all mathematical systems, as are the movement of the planets and the stars above. 

Numbers are essentially a human discovery, and also a type of invention. They exist in some intrinsic sense, as the universe works via mathematical systems and various interlocking complex rhythms. However, humanity has invented and tuned the system of numbers, essentially transforming them into a complex and intriguing language. 

Numbers are one of humanity’s most intriguing inventions and they’ve changed the way we study, perceive, and comprehend the world around us. They allow us to accurately measure and assess elements of our physical realities, furthering the fields of science and engineering. 

Aside from a number’s physical and natural uses within mathematics, engineering, science, and other disciplines, they also have deep and intriguing symbolism. Numbers have always intrigued us in ways beyond science, venturing into the supernatural and spiritual realms. 

This is where numerology comes in. 

Numerology was formed in part as a way of amalgamating theories on numbers and their spiritual properties. It is not a new form of mysticism or spiritualism and actually dates back to ancient civilizations in both the east and west of the ancient world. It has grown into a well-developed and highly popular and interesting form of modern spiritualism.

Numerology: At The Intersection Between Science and Spirituality 

Numerology is entirely not a spiritual discipline that is confined to those with strictly spiritual beliefs or characters. Many great scientists have been fascinated by the spiritual essence that lies beneath numbers. Pythagoras and Plato devised numerous theories that worked around the spiritual qualities of both numbers and letters, and many of these theories have become very influential in modern mathematics, astronomy, and philosophy. 

Sir Isaac Newton is another prolific example here, and he is also indeed one of the world’s most influential and prolific scientists. His ‘eureka!’ moment when first conceptualizing gravity after an apple fell onto his head is world-famous. 

Sir Issac Newton was also extremely intrigued by numerology and actually produced many works that would today be considered spiritualist or numerological studies, or even studies of the occult. 

One example of this is his study of the visible light spectrum. Today, we widely consider there to be 7 colors in the rainbow or visible light spectrum. These are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. 

However, in reality, the color ‘indigo’ does not really exist and cannot be discerned from blue and violet. Really, the spectrum is more of a continuous gradient and it’s very hard to pick out any solid colors. Essentially, there are not really 7 colors to the rainbow at all – we just accept it like that because Newton wanted there to be 7. 

But why?

Because 7 is a number of immense spiritual symbolism. There are 7 planets in the solar system when we look to the sky (so excluding Earth), 7 continents on earth, 7 notes in most musical scales, etc. In the Bible, there are 7 deadly sins and numerous other examples of 7 being used to evoke particular meaning. Newton was heavily interested in this and just really wanted the visible light spectrum to fit into this pattern, and indeed, he did a pretty good job of it. 

Types of Numerology 

Numerology is a very wide-ranging topic with multiple schools of thought, or variants. There are 3 main types of numerology.

Pythagorean or Western Numerology

Pythagorean Numerology is the most popular type of numerology. It is streamlined and fairly easy to learn or use. It was developed by and inspired by Pythagoras, one of Ancient Greece’s most famous mathematicians. It uses the Latin alphabet. 

Pythagoras’ revelations set the tone for modern European science. There were similar individuals in Ancient China and elsewhere who made the same discoveries at similar times, but Pythagoras laid out many of the most complete and well-documented theories on mathematics and astronomy. 

Pythagoras was also immensely interested in the spiritual essence of numbers and also letters. He saw them as having an intrinsic value, a property that was unique to them. These values or characteristics took the form of vibrations or energies that radiated from the number. 

Whilst Pythagoras’ works laid the foundations for Pythagorean Numerology, he also had a big following. His following was called The Pythagoreans. Many of these followers became engrossed in the spiritual nature of numbers and how they held the key to all life both on Earth and beyond it. Indeed, according to legend, Pythagoras himself exclaimed ‘everything is numbers!’ 

The Pythagoreans had later developed documents on the spiritual qualities of numbers and letters. This also involved a translation chart that allowed letters to be converted into numbers.

From Pythagorean Numerology’s early beginnings, it has been re-theorized and modernized. It is now the most popular form of numerology. Despite its modern modifications, it retains a long and illustrious history that links right through many influential scientists and spiritualists all the way to Pythagoras in some 590CE.

Pythagorean Numerology works by process of reduction. The base single-digit numbers from 1 – 9 form the backbone of the entire universe of numbers, with the addition of 3 Master Numbers, 11, 22, and 33. 

 

Double digits or triple digits, etc, are reduced via addition only. 

 

So, 1999 becomes 1 + 9 + 9 + 9 = 28

28 is then reduced in the same way: 

2 + 8 = 10

 

And so on…

1 + 0  = 1 

Chaldean Numerology

The Chaldeans were a civilization older than Ancient Greece from some 1000BC. They created the city of Babylon in Mesopotamia. Chaldean Numerology was used to assess the energies of thought, speech and communication. It was a way of accessing complex language on a spiritual level. In essence, the goals of Chaldean Numerology are similar to Pythagorean Numerology, but it uses a different chart that runs from 1 – 8. 9 is connected to infinity. 

Kabbalah Numerology

Originating from Hebrew or Jewish mystics, also known as the Kabbal, Kabbalah Numerology is linked to the act of gematria. Gematria is the process of analysing letters and numbers for their codified meaning, e.g. in the Bible. Kabbalah Numerology revolves around the Hebrew alphabet.

The Uses Of Numerology

Numerology would be best described as a form of divination. It is an investigation into the mystical and spiritual links between numbers and also letters. 

In practical and simple terms, numerology is used for discovering elements of our conscious and subconscious self on both natural and supernatural levels. It concerns both the physical and metaphysical and posits that there are spiritual energies that lie beneath numbers in their raw form. 

Unlike other types of modern spiritualism, numerology harmonizes well with some forms of science, hence why many scientists such as Sir Isaac Newton have become deeply fascinated with it.

Basic Summary of Numbers in Pythagorean Numerology

Pythagorean Numerology revolves around single digits from 1 – 9 and three master numbers, 11, 22 and 33. Numbers calculated in the Pythagorean way will always reduce to these figures. 

 

Master Numbers are amongst the most intriguing in numerology. You can generate a Master Number from many parts of your numerology chart. Master Numbers can standalone as they are, or can be reduced.

Master Numbers

MASTER NUMBER 11

11 is known as one of the most spiritual and psychic numbers. 1 is indeed the base unit upon which whole numbers are built. 

 

Master Number 11 also reduces to 2, and this represents the beginning of the journey towards infinity. It is a mark of illumination and awareness, and indicates our spiritual awakening. 

 

When 11 is found in your numerology chart, it also represents great challenges juxtaposed with great rewards and is a sign that you must traverse your path carefully as it is indeed a fulfilling one – you do not want to put a foot wrong. This can be a lonely journey but your focus puts you in excellent stead for it. 

MASTER NUMBER 22

22, which can be reduced to 4, is known as the ‘Master Builder’. It has a practical and pragmatic quality that is balanced but motivated in pursuit of real-world progress. It is less spiritually inclined than 11 and acts more in the physical realms. 

Master Number 22 is indicative of a quest for practical skills. It is an indication that you have to place more vigor in your projects, lest you let them fall by the wayside. 

 

22, when its energy is left unnourished, can quickly fall into laziness, idleness, and self-destruction. It is a cue to act fast and act now. 

MASTER NUMBER 33

 

Known as the ‘Master Teacher’, 33 is a rarer Master Number in numerology. Reducible to 6, it is a mark of support, strength, and knowledge. It represents an important role, or a role that needs to be taken on with responsibility. This also comes with a burden that may weigh heavily on you – but it is a fulfilling path that you must commit to. 

 

33 is also influential and this may be an indication of how you need to be careful with what you provide to others. Make sure you are acting ethically and righteously in your role as Master Teacher – more people look towards you as a role model or example than you might expect or believe.

Biblical Numerology

Numerology is also studied in other contexts. One such example is Biblical numerology. 

 

Biblical numerology is the numerological investigation into the Bibles’ symbolic use of numbers. Even if you are not religious, these numbers have probably influenced you in some way, or at least, you’ve probably heard of them. 

 

One key example, as mentioned, is the number 7. 7 has deep cross-cultural symbolism and also repeats as a number with striking relevance to natural systems, like the 7 planets beyond Earth, 7 days of the week, 7 musical notes on a major scale, 7 colors in the visible light spectrum and 7 continents. 

 

7 also appears many times in the Bible, particularly in the book of Revelation e.g. 7 deadly sins, 7 trumpets, 7 mountains, 7 stars, 7 spirits, etc. 

 

Whilst 7 is a potent example, similar connections can be made between all of the base numbers. 

Feng Shui Numerology

Numerology is not only a Western concept. It has links with many other cultures, including Ancient Chinese culture and the art/spiritual discipline of Feng Shui. 

 

Feng Shui concerns the orientation of various energies and it has greatly influenced the design of living spaces and buildings throughout Asia. In Chinese numerology, there is a perfect mathematical square named the  Lo Shu Square. Each row and column adds up to 15, and thus, this is a perfect mathematical structure.
